OUS Staff Bios

2K --Shelley Browning



Working in education since 1990. She has been with OUS since 2016.  She has a masters in Education with endorsements in Reading and Educationally Handicapped. Mrs. Browning grew up in Oxford and attended local schools. She has been teaching for 29 years.  She has been married to  Gary Browning for 22 years. She has one daughter and one son. Her son will be a Senior in high school in August of 2021.  Her daughter has three children.  She retired from the State with 26 ½  years of service.  She loves working at OUS.


3K --Jerica Crawford


Working in education since 2015

Degree: Associate Degree in Early Childhood

Bachelor of Science in Education (in progress May 2021) 

Joined “The National Society of Leadership and Success” in 2018 for obtaining a GPA of 3.7 or higher. 


Jerica grew up in Coffeeville. She has one child named Jordyn Willis, who attends OUS. Enjoy being in the classroom with the children and witnessing first hand their growth and improvements throughout the year. During free time she writes in her personal journal and plans family outings. 


4K --Cindy Bynum



Working in education since 2017

Degree: M.A. in Early Childhood Education, Summa Cum Laude (2017).

 A Diploma in Residential Planning at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh (2009).


Mrs. Bynum is originally from Dayton, Ohio where she met her husband and moved to Mississippi with him in 2012. They are raising their two charming children, Megan & Gavin, who are also students at OUS. When she is not teaching she enjoys refinishing and repurposing furniture. She also spends time swimming, bicycling, and hiking with her family.



5K --Angela Butler



Working in education since 1993

Degree:  Bachelor of Science in Education

Endorsements:  K-8


Honors:  Graduated College with Highest Honors, Teacher of the Year in 2000 at Como Middle School, Teacher of the Year at OUS in 2013 and 2017.

Ms. Angela is originally from Gautier, Mississippi. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Southern Mississippi. She has been teaching for twenty-seven years and has now taught twenty of those years at OUS. She loves kindergarteners and being part of the OUS family! In her spare time, she likes to read and do anything crafty.

Karen McDougal

Degree:  Bachelor of Science in Education

Endorsements:  K-6; Reading, K-12; Kindergarten and PreKindergarten

Honors:  Teacher of the Year, 2018


Mrs. McDougal is originally from Texas but she and her husband have called Oxford home for the past nine years.  She received her degree in Elementary Education from Texas Tech University.  This year marks her 25th year in education most of which she has spent teaching in kindergarten and first grade classrooms.  In her spare time, she enjoys walking, cooking, gardening, and reading.

Cindy Summerlin 



Working in Education since

Degree:  Bachelor of Science in Education

Endorsements:  K- 4; ESL; Special Ed K - 12


Mrs. Summerlin has taught school for 15 years.  The first six years she taught in San Antonio public schools and the last nine years have been at OUS. She is originally from the Mississippi gulf coast but she, her husband, and two children (grown now) have enjoyed living numerous places, including abroad for 8 years. They moved to Oxford eleven years ago and love being back in Mississippi.  Cindy loves children of all ages and likes to garden and travel in her spare time.


5th -8th Grade

Kathy Beasley


MS Beasley is originally from Calhoun County, but now resides in Taylor. She received her degree in Education from the University of Mississippi. She started teaching in 1978 in Calhoun City . She taught in Calhoun County Schools for 32 years before retiring. After retirement from the public system,  she began teaching at Calhoun Academy. She spent 5 years at CA before coming to OUS in 2015. 



Thyra Bari



Thyra (pronounced like Tara) was born and raised in Houston, Texas.  She moved to Oxford in 2019 with her husband, Bob, and three children; Ella, Hunter, and Cooper.  After staying home with the children during their toddler years, she returned to work as a preschool teacher in 2015 and loves working with children of all ages.  Thyra joined the OUS family in 2020.  



Debra West



I am married to Deputy Thomas West. Together we have three children Cody, Henry and Ava Claire.  We live in Water Valley. I have been teaching for the past 12 years.



Kristi Morgan



For the past twelve years, Kristi has been teaching in Early Childhood. Teaching is her passion. She has been a part of OUS since August 2019. Before working at OUS, she was a teacher at Creative Learning Center of Oxford.  Kristi grew up in Oxford and attended Oxford School District. She was recently married in June of 2020. It was special to her to have her OUS family welcome her in and also go through the engagement and marriage journey with her. Kristi does not have any children of her own but she loves every child as if they were her own. She does have a furry friend at home, a cat named Gomer. She hopes to have her own children one day but for now, she is enjoying just loving her students like her own. She thinks highly of her work family, her students as well as their families. She currently works in the 3-K classroom along with Jerica Crawford. In her free time, she loves to be outside and painting the most. Beach trips are her favorite. Though she loves the mountains, she would love to see and hear the waves any day!
